How a Noto Wine Visit Works
Most Val di Noto estates are cellar-door tastings, not coach tours. Here is the shape of the visit.
Book a time, not just a day
Tastings here are scheduled. The Ramaddini estate asks for two days' notice and runs the visit at a set time, so book the slot before you plan the rest of the day around Noto or the beach at Marzamemi.
Get yourself to the estate
Almost every Noto-area tasting excludes transport. The wineries sit in the countryside between Noto, Pachino and Avola, which means a hire car or a taxi from Syracuse. Only the Syracuse pick-up day includes the driving.
Cellar first, then the glasses
Expect a walk through the vineyard or the winery, a look at the tanks and barrels, and then a seated tasting of three to five wines. Nero d'Avola is always poured; Grillo, Moscato and a rosé usually join it.
The food is the second half
Even the cheapest Ramaddini option comes with fried beans and chickpeas, bread and oil, cured meats, cheeses, bruschetta and Modica chocolate. The lunch options turn that into a full meal — do not book a restaurant for the same afternoon.

Choosing a Noto Wine Tour
Which estate, whether to drive, and how much food you actually want with the wine.
Noto is the baroque town; the wine is made in the flat, hot country south of it, between Noto, Pachino, Marzamemi and Avola. This is where Nero d’Avola took its name, and it is still the grape almost every estate here pours first. The good news for a visitor is that the tastings are cheap by Sicilian standards. The catch is that nearly all of them expect you to arrive under your own steam.
Four ways to taste in the Val di Noto
The cellar-door tasting near Marzamemi. Ramaddini’s Val di Noto tasting is the default answer for most people: a guided tour of the winery and its history, four of the estate’s labels, and an aperitivo of fried beans and chickpeas, bread with the farm’s own olive oil, cured meats and cheeses with jams, bruschetta with dried tomatoes, Modica chocolate and cooked must. It costs $49, is rated 4.8 / 5 from 10 reviews, and the estate says the visit runs about an hour. Our breakdown →
The same estate sells a lighter version, the FR Lovers tasting, at $29: the same cellar tour, three wines instead of four, and a simpler snack of fried beans, chickpeas and bread with oil. If you want the tour and a taste but not a meal, this is the cheapest way into a Val di Noto cellar. Its bigger sibling, the Dioniso tasting at $70, adds a fifth wine, ricotta, olives, caponata and a main course, which is lunch in all but name.
The Nero d’Avola tasting in the Noto countryside. The guided wine tasting in the Val di Noto at $59 is a seated tasting of four wines of the area with almonds, olives, bread and Feudo Maccari olive oil, with pricier options that add Pachino cherry tomatoes, caciocavallo, Palazzolo salami and pistachio. Rated 4.5 / 5 from 21 reviews. Children under four are free and get a cheese board on the child rate, which makes it the easiest of these for families. Our breakdown →
The winery lunch. Terre di Noto’s tasting with light lunch at $134 is a vineyard and cellar visit, four labels of your choice, a long aperitivo, a pasta course and a cannolo. Cozzo del Parroco’s lunch or dinner in the Noto countryside at $139 is a three-course farm meal with one glass of Grillo and one of Nero d’Avola rather than a tasting flight. Both are new listings with very few reviews, so judge them on the menu, which is spelled out in full.
The day with a driver. The Syracuse to Noto, Marzamemi and Avola day is the only option here that includes transport: pick-up in Syracuse, a stop in baroque Noto, the fishing village of Marzamemi, and an afternoon at Tenuta Palmeri in Avola. It is priced at $406 per group of up to four, and the tasting itself is paid separately at the estate, so budget for that on top. For a couple that is expensive; for four people it is roughly the cost of two taxis and it removes the driving question entirely.
The driving question
Every tasting above except the Syracuse day excludes transport, and none of these estates is walkable from Noto. From Syracuse the Marzamemi estates are about an hour by road; from Noto itself, twenty to thirty minutes. Someone has to stay sober. If that is nobody, either book the group day or base yourself in Marzamemi and take a taxi.
If you would rather have the whole day organised and do not mind the volcano being the main event, the wine tours from Syracuse page compares the Etna days that leave from there.
Which wine you are actually tasting
The area’s reds are Nero d’Avola, often labelled under the Eloro DOC or its Pachino subzone, where the red must be at least 80 percent Nero d’Avola. The Noto DOC covers Nero d’Avola and Moscato Bianco, and the sweet Moscato di Noto is the wine the appellation was originally built on. Expect ripe dark fruit, warmth and soft tannin: this is a sun-and-limestone red, not a mountain one. For the cooler, paler style of Sicilian red, Etna is the other side of the island in every sense.
The wider Nero d’Avola page compares tastings of the grape across Sicily, including the Cerasuolo di Vittoria estates near Ragusa. If Noto is a base for two or three days, the best wineries to visit in Sicily guide has the longer list. Otherwise check availability for your dates — the Ramaddini tastings are booked by slot, and two days’ notice is the estate’s own rule.

Noto Wine Tour Questions
What visitors ask before booking a tasting in the Val di Noto.
Both, but plan them as two halves. The town is the architecture; the wine is made in the flat country south of it towards Pachino, Marzamemi and Avola, where Nero d'Avola took its name. A morning in Noto and an afternoon tasting at an estate near Marzamemi is the standard day, and the cellar-door tastings here start at $29, which is cheaper than almost anywhere else in Sicily. See the Sicily-wide comparison if you are choosing between regions.
Honestly, very few. Every tasting on this page except one excludes transport, and the estates sit in open countryside twenty to thirty minutes from Noto. The exception is the Syracuse pick-up day at $406 per group of up to four, which drives you to Noto, Marzamemi and an Avola estate. Otherwise a taxi from Noto or Marzamemi is the practical answer, and a hire car the cheaper one if somebody is happy to stay on water.
The cellar-door tastings run from $29 for three wines with a light snack, to $49 for four wines with a full Sicilian aperitivo, to $59 for a four-wine tasting with Feudo Maccari olive oil and local products. Winery lunches sit at $134 to $139. The only day trip with transport is $406 per group of up to four, and its tasting is paid separately at the estate. Every figure here is the operator's live price and includes free cancellation.
The Ramaddini estate says its visits last about an hour, which covers the cellar tour and the tasting. Add time if you take a lunch option, and treat the whole thing as a two-hour stop once you factor in getting there. The estate also asks for bookings at least two days in advance, so this is not a same-day decision.
Nero d'Avola, always. The reds around Pachino are sold under the Eloro DOC, where the Pachino subzone requires at least 80 percent Nero d'Avola, and the Noto DOC covers Nero d'Avola alongside Moscato Bianco. Most estates pour a Grillo or another white first, a rosé, then one or two reds, and the sweet Moscato di Noto often closes the flight. Expect ripe dark fruit and warmth rather than the pale, mineral style of Etna.
Nearly always, and more than you expect. The $49 Ramaddini tasting comes with fried beans and chickpeas, bread with the farm's oil, cured meats, cheeses with jams, bruschetta, Modica chocolate and cooked must. The $70 Dioniso version adds ricotta, olives, caponata and a main course. The $134 and $139 options are a full lunch. If you have booked a lunch option, do not also book a restaurant.
Yes at the estates listed here. The guided tasting in the Val di Noto is free for children up to four and puts a cheese board on the child rate, and the Marzamemi tasting rooms offer a kid-friendly plate. The wine itself is for over-18s, and the vineyard walks are on rough ground, so a buggy is not ideal.
Noto and Avola are the grape's home and pour it on its own. Vittoria, an hour west near Ragusa, blends it with Frappato to make Cerasuolo di Vittoria, Sicily's only DOCG, which is lighter and more fragrant. If you want the classic full-bodied Nero d'Avola, stay in the Val di Noto; if you are curious about the blend, the Nero d'Avola page compares tastings on both sides.
Spring and autumn. The south-east is the hottest corner of Sicily, and a vineyard walk at 2 pm in July or August is hard work, so summer visits are best booked for the late-afternoon slots. Harvest in the Val di Noto comes early, and the estates are busiest then, so book ahead in September. The tastings themselves run all year.
You can reach Noto by bus or train from Syracuse, but the estates are outside town and the last stretch needs a taxi. Most visitors staying in Syracuse either take the group pick-up day, hire a car for the day, or combine an Etna departure from Syracuse instead. The wine tours from Syracuse page sets out those options side by side.
