Guided Wine Tasting in the Val di Noto
The pick for the grape itself: four wines of the Noto area, poured seated with almonds, olives and Feudo Maccari olive oil, in the countryside Nero d'Avola is named after.
Highlights
- Four Val di Noto wines, led by Nero d'Avola, tasted at a countryside winery near Noto
- Sicilian pairings: almonds, olives, bread and Feudo Maccari olive oil, or a fuller plate on the upgraded option
- A guide who explains the climate and limestone soils behind the wines; pitched well for beginners
- Child tickets with a cheese board instead of wine; under-fours free
- About 45 minutes, so it fits between Noto and the Marzamemi coast
What's Included
- Guided tasting of 4 Val di Noto wines
- Almonds, Sicilian olives, bread and Feudo Maccari extra virgin olive oil (standard option)
- Fuller pairing plate with dried Pachino tomatoes, caciocavallo, Palazzolo salami and pistachio babaganoush (upgraded option)
- Technical tasting of two extra virgin olive oils (olive-oil option)
How a Nero d'Avola Tasting Works
Four things that are true of almost every tasting on this page.
Pick the region, because it changes the wine
The Val di Noto and Avola pour the classic, full-bodied version. Vittoria blends it with Frappato into the lighter Cerasuolo di Vittoria. Western estates near Alcamo and Partinico make fresher, sometimes natural, versions. Same grape, three different glasses.
Book a slot in advance
These are small family estates, not tasting bars with walk-in hours. Most run one or two guided visits a day and confirm the time after booking. Two days' notice is the norm; the Palermo tasting room is the exception and takes evening bookings.
Arrange your own transport
None of the estate tastings compared here includes pick-up. The Noto and Vittoria estates are a taxi or a hire car from town. If you cannot drive, the Palermo tasting pours four regional Nero d'Avola styles in one sitting, no car required.
Expect food, and a short vineyard walk
A tour of the vines or cellar, then a seated flight of three to five wines with local products: cheeses, cured meats, olives, bread and oil, often Modica chocolate. Wear shoes for rough ground; the walks are skipped in rain.

Where to Taste Nero d'Avola in Sicily
Three regions, three styles, and the estates that open their doors in each.
Nero d’Avola is the red grape Sicily is known for: the most planted red on the island, named after the town of Avola in the south-east, and still called Calabrese by older growers and the national vine registry. You can taste it in almost any bar in Sicily. Tasting it at an estate is a different thing, and the estate you choose decides which Nero d’Avola you get.
Three regions, three different glasses
The Val di Noto: the classic. Around Noto, Pachino and Avola the grape is grown on limestone under the hottest sun in Sicily and bottled on its own, often under the Eloro DOC, whose Pachino reds must be at least 80 percent Nero d’Avola. This is the ripe, dark, warm style most people picture. The guided wine tasting in the Val di Noto is the page’s pick because it is built around the local wines rather than a single producer’s list: four wines of the area, seated, with almonds, Sicilian olives, bread and Feudo Maccari olive oil, at $59 and rated 4.5 / 5 from 21 reviews. Our breakdown →
Nearby, the Ramaddini estate near Marzamemi runs the cheapest cellar visits on the island: three wines with the FR Lovers tasting at $29, or four wines with the full Val di Noto aperitivo at $49, rated 4.8 / 5. The Noto wine tours page compares every option in that corner, including the winery lunches.
Vittoria and Ragusa: the blend. An hour west, Nero d’Avola is blended with the fragrant Frappato to make Cerasuolo di Vittoria, Sicily’s only DOCG, granted in 2005. The rules allow 50 to 70 percent Nero d’Avola with 30 to 50 percent Frappato, and the result is lighter, paler and more perfumed than anything from Noto. The winery tour and tasting near Ragusa at $45 walks the Nero d’Avola vines, tours the cellar and pours four wines in the barrel room with scacce, cheeses and taralli, with the option of a Nero d’Avola grappa; it is rated 4.9 / 5 from 9 reviews. Our breakdown →
Two newer listings in the same area are worth knowing about. The organic winery tour with light lunch near Ragusa at $70 pours a Frappato sparkling and a Cerasuolo alongside a light lunch and a visit to an old convent, and the Vittoria brunch with four wines at $58 pairs a vineyard walk with Hyblaean dishes. Neither has enough reviews yet to rank; both spell out exactly what is poured. For something different again, the cave tasting near Modica with a WSET sommelier at $58 pours four wines from across the island, Nero d’Avola among them, inside a limestone cave in the Cava d’Ispica.
The west: fresher and sometimes natural. Nero d’Avola is grown across western Sicily too, usually in a fresher style. The natural wine vineyard tour and tasting near Alcamo at $41 is six low-intervention wines with the producers themselves, rated 4.9 / 5 from 54 reviews, and the historic vineyard tour near Partinico at $56 is a walk through vines, olives and citrus followed by three wines with brunch, rated 4.9 / 5 from 43 reviews. Both are within an hour of Palermo and both exclude transport.
If you cannot get to an estate
The wine tasting with snacks at Bottega Monteleone in central Palermo is the most reviewed wine experience in Sicily: five regional wines from small producers, sparkling to dessert, with Sicilian tapas, at $51 and rated 4.8 / 5 from 924 reviews. It is a tasting room, not a vineyard, but it is the one place on this page where you will taste a Noto-style and a Vittoria-style red side by side without driving. Our breakdown →
Choosing between them
If the grape is the point, the Val di Noto tasting. If you want the estate visit at the lowest price, the $29 Ramaddini tasting. If you are curious about the DOCG blend and are staying around Ragusa or Modica, the winery near Ragusa. If you are in Palermo with no car, Bottega Monteleone. And if you are on the east coast near the volcano, the grape is a supporting act there: Etna’s reds are Nerello Mascalese, and the Etna wine tours page is the right one.
The best wine regions in Sicily guide sets the three styles against Etna and Marsala. Otherwise, check availability for your dates.

Nero d'Avola Questions
The grape, the styles, and what a tasting actually involves.
Sicily's signature red. Nero d'Avola is the most planted red grape on the island, named after the town of Avola in the south-east, and still known as Calabrese in the Italian vine registry. Grown alone it makes a dark, ripe, full-bodied red; blended with Frappato around Vittoria it makes the lighter Cerasuolo di Vittoria, Sicily's only DOCG. It is grown all over the island, so where you taste it changes the glass more than the label does.
Dry, almost always. It is a dry red table wine with ripe dark-fruit flavour, which some people mistake for sweetness. The genuinely sweet wines of the same south-eastern corner are made from Moscato, not Nero d'Avola, and a Val di Noto tasting will often pour a sweet Moscato di Noto at the end of the flight so you can compare the two.
From the Val di Noto and Avola: dark cherry and plum, warmth, soft tannin and a full body, the product of limestone soil and a hot climate. From Vittoria as Cerasuolo: paler, more fragrant and lighter on the palate because Frappato makes up 30 to 50 percent of the blend. From the west near Alcamo: fresher and, at the natural-wine estates, lighter still. If you only taste one, the Val di Noto tasting pours the classic version.
At the source: the estates around Noto, Pachino, Marzamemi and Avola. The tastings there start at $29 and are the cheapest cellar visits on the island. For the DOCG blend, the wineries around Vittoria and Ragusa. If you have no car, Bottega Monteleone in Palermo pours five regional wines with tapas for $51 and is rated 4.8 / 5 from 924 reviews, the most of any wine tasting in Sicily.
Estate tastings compared here run from $29 for three wines with a snack near Marzamemi, through $41 to $59 for four to six wines with local food in the Val di Noto, near Ragusa or near Alcamo, up to $70 for a tasting with a light lunch. The Palermo tasting room is $51. None of the estate options includes transport; that is the hidden cost if you are not driving.
For the estates, yes, or a taxi. Every vineyard tasting on this page excludes transport and sits in open countryside. The Noto page lists the one Syracuse pick-up day that includes the driving. The no-car alternative is the Palermo tasting room, which is in the city centre and takes evening bookings.
Sicily's only DOCG wine, granted in 2005: a blend of 50 to 70 percent Nero d'Avola with 30 to 50 percent Frappato, from the sandy red soils around Vittoria in the province of Ragusa. It is lighter and more perfumed than a straight Nero d'Avola. The winery tour and tasting near Ragusa at $45 and the organic winery with light lunch at $70 both pour it; the second also pours a Frappato sparkling.
Yes on every option here. The estates pair the wines with local products: almonds, olives, bread and oil in the Val di Noto; scacce, cheeses and taralli near Ragusa; cheese, olives, sun-dried tomatoes and fruit near Alcamo; brunch near Partinico. A couple of options are a light lunch. The Palermo tasting's snacks add up to a light meal according to the operator.
Spring and autumn are the comfortable seasons, and the vineyard walks are at their best in May and June before the heat and in September and October around harvest. The south-east is the hottest part of Sicily in July and August, so pick a late-afternoon slot if you visit then. Note that estates skip the vineyard walk in rain and only run the cellar and tasting. See the best time guide for the month-by-month picture.
They are different enough that it depends on what you like. Nero d'Avola is generous, dark and easy to enjoy; Etna reds are Nerello Mascalese, pale, taut and closer to a Burgundy or a Barolo in style. Where you are staying usually decides it: the south-east and Palermo for Nero d'Avola, Taormina and Catania for Etna. The best wine tours in Sicily comparison puts both side by side.
