Guided Etna Wine Tasting Half-Day Tour from Taormina

The most-reviewed Etna wine tour on the market: five hours, one north-slope estate, four wines and a Sicilian aperitivo, rated 4.7 / 5 from 602 reviews. The default answer for a first visit.

Highlights

  • Guided visit to a north-slope Etna winery at Linguaglossa with a four-wine tasting
  • Sicilian aperitivo of cheeses, preserves, bread, eggs and estate olive oil served with the wines
  • The drive inland through Fiumefreddo, Piedimonte Etneo and the lava-stone villages, narrated by the guide
  • Pick-up and drop-off at five points along the Taormina and Giardini Naxos coast
  • Half-day format: five hours door to door, back by late afternoon

What's Included

  • Tasting of four wines
  • Small Sicilian aperitivo: bread, preserved vegetables, cheeses, dried tomatoes, hard-boiled eggs and local olive oil
  • Guided visit of the winery
  • Coach transport from and to the pick-up point
  • Guide in English, Italian or French

How a Taormina Departure Works

From the coast strip to the last pour, in four steps.

  1. Pick-up along the coast strip

Most tours collect between 8:30 and 9:30 from central Taormina or your hotel, working along the Giardini Naxos and Letojanni strip before turning inland. Some use pick-up points rather than hotels; check the inclusions.

  2. Inland through the lava villages

The road climbs through Fiumefreddo di Sicilia, Piedimonte Etneo and Linguaglossa: lava-stone houses, citrus and almond groves, with the guide narrating the way up. Budget about an hour, even though the map says less.

  3. The estate, at around 900 metres

Cellar walk first, tasting second. Four or five current vintages poured in order: a Carricante white, sometimes a sparkling, a rosato, then the Etna Rosso, with cheese, preserves, egg, bread and the estate's oil alongside.

  4. Back on the coast by late afternoon

Half-day tours return around 14:00 to 15:00; the full days run to roughly 17:30. Because someone else drove, nobody had to skip the red.

Taormina Departures

Choosing an Etna Wine Tour from Taormina

The four formats that leave Taormina, what each costs, and which one is worth your day.

Taormina is the best base in Sicily for an Etna wine tour, for a reason of geography rather than glamour. The town sits on the coast almost directly across from the volcano’s north-east flank, which is where nearly every visitable estate in the Etna DOC happens to be. The Catania side has the road to the summit; the Taormina side has the cellars.

The drive is shorter than the tour

Linguaglossa, gateway to the north-slope wine villages, is only around 23 km from Taormina by road. Every tour nonetheless describes the ride as roughly an hour each way, and guests confirm it. Both are true: tours make several pick-ups along the Taormina, Giardini Naxos and Letojanni strip before turning inland, and the estates sit well above the villages at around 900 metres. Plan with the hour, not the map. It is why a “half-day” from Taormina is five hours rather than three.

The four departures worth comparing

The half-day tasting: $67, five hours, 602 reviews, more than any other Etna wine tour. One north-slope estate, a guided cellar walk, four wines and a Sicilian aperitivo of cheeses, preserved vegetables, dried tomatoes, egg, bread and the estate’s olive oil. Transport is from set pick-up points, not door to door. This is the default answer for a first visit. Our breakdown →

The food and wine tour: $208, six hours, door-to-door pick-up in a Mercedes minivan. Five glasses across two family-run properties, a guided cellar visit, cold appetisers at the first stop and a full organic lunch on a terrace above the vineyards at the second, then a homemade limoncello. Rated 4.9 / 5 from 424 reviews, and the featured tour on this site. Our breakdown →

The small-group two-winery day: $168, 8.5 hours, a nine-seater. Castiglione di Sicilia first, an aperitivo and tasting at the first cellar, then three DOP Etna wines with a full lunch at the second. The best-value way to see more than one estate; it does not admit under-18s. 4.8 / 5 from 102 reviews.

The full-day Etna, wine and Alcantara tour: $157, 8.5 hours, small group. A two-hour walk around extinct craters at about 2,000 metres, a lava cave, a Sicilian lunch with an Etna tasting at a winery, and the Alcantara canyons from a viewpoint. Boots, jacket and pole included, swapped for snowshoes in winter. 4.9 / 5 from 511 reviews. Book it for the volcano; treat the tasting as a bonus.

Which one, honestly

First time and you want wine: the half-day. Etna itself is the reason you came to Sicily: the full day. A couple who would rather eat well than tick a crater: the food and wine tour. Four of you: run the numbers on the private three-winery day with food and wine, ten wines across three estates with a sommelier at each, in a car nobody else is in, for $325 per person. Our breakdown → And if you want to see the volcano and taste properly in one small group, the Etna walking tour with winery food and wine tasting does both for $175, capped at eight, rated 4.9 / 5 from 338 reviews.

What Taormina cannot give you

Two things. It cannot make the tastings cheaper: booking a north-slope cellar directly starts at $49 at Gambino, because you are not paying for a minibus. And it cannot get you to the south side conveniently; for the summit road, the sunset tours and the urban wineries, Catania is the better base. Jo United Kingdom

"Absolutely excellent wine tasting tour with Isabella. She was a superb guide, very knowledgeable about Sicilian culture and traditions and about the landscape as well as, of course, the wine. The Gambino winery was very generous with 5 excellent varied glasses of wine per person and a superb tasting board to accompany. All situated in a beautiful hillside location with amazing views of Linguaglossa and beyond to Taormina and the coast. Highly recommended!!"
