"The experience was amazing! Matteo was an incredible guide, extremely knowledgeable and very well-prepared. Any minor setbacks that occurred were resolved very quickly, without any of us being inconvenienced. He truly helped us with everything we needed and taught us a lot of new and interesting things. I would highly recommend this trip to everyone, as you get to see many new places and meet people who share the same passion!"

How a Catania Departure Works
The south side is the volcano side. Here is the shape of the day most Catania tours sell.
Pick-up in the city, then the SP92 up through Nicolosi
Most tours collect you at or near your accommodation between 8:00 and 9:00. The road climbs from sea level through Nicolosi or Zafferana Etnea, crossing old lava flows, to Rifugio Sapienza at about 1,900 metres in roughly an hour.
Craters, lava caves and 2,000 metres
Volcano days walk the Silvestri or Sartorius craters, explore a lava tube with helmet and lamp, and reach around 2,000 metres. Boots, jackets and sticks are usually supplied; in winter, snowshoes. Bring a layer even in summer.
Lunch at a winery on the way down
The wine comes with the meal: a Sicilian lunch of antipasti, a pasta and a main, paired with Etna wines at a family estate. On the sunset tours the glass of Etna DOC is poured at altitude instead, with light food, as the light goes.
Or skip the drive: taste in Catania itself
Catania has wineries and tasting rooms inside the city. An 18th-century urban winery serves a four-wine Sicilian lunch a short ride from the centre, and a tasting room near the Duomo pours four Etna DOC wines in 90 minutes. No transfer, no lost afternoon.

Choosing an Etna Wine Tour from Catania
Why the Catania catalogue leans towards volcano days, and where the actual wine is.
Catania is the closest city to Etna, and that shapes what its tours sell. From the centre, the road through Nicolosi reaches Rifugio Sapienza at about 1,900 metres in roughly an hour. That is why the Catania catalogue is heavy on volcano days: craters, lava caves and a winery lunch on the way down. It is lighter on pure cellar days, because the south slope has far fewer estates open to visitors than the north.
The volcano day with wine at lunch
This is the format most people book from Catania, and the Mount Etna, wine and Alcantara tour with lunch is the reference version. A naturalist guide, an air-conditioned van from near your accommodation, a walk around the Sartorius craters or the 2002 crater to 2,000 metres, a lava cave with helmet and lamp, lunch with wine at a winery, then the Alcantara Gorges with entry included. $110 for eight hours, rated 4.9 / 5 from 531 reviews. Boots and jackets are lent free if you ask when booking. Our breakdown →
The full-day Etna and wine tour from Catania is the same idea without the gorge and with a cap of eight people: a nature walk in Etna Park up to 1,900 metres, a lava cave, and a cellar visit with tasting, $137, 4.9 / 5 from 189 reviews. The half-day Etna and wine experience compresses it to craters, a cave and a tasting for $121, rated 4.5 / 5 from 250 reviews.
Book one of these if you came for Etna. The tasting is real, but it is one course of the day.
Sunset with a glass at altitude
Catania’s distinctive product is the evening tour. The Mount Etna sunset tour with wine tasting leaves the city centre, drives off-road along old rural tracks past the 1792 lava flows, stands you above the Bove Valley and pours a glass of Etna wine with light food as the sun goes down. $87, rated 5.0 / 5 from 201 reviews, minimum two people. The Etna sunset and Etna DOC wine tour covers the same ground from Piazza Stesicoro for $84, 5.0 / 5 from 166 reviews, but food and drinks are not included, so read the inclusions before you compare prices.
Wine without the drive
If you want the wine and not the mountain, Catania has options no other base does. The Etna urban winery Sicilian lunch with wine tasting is a walled 1790 estate inside the city: a shared table, a three-course Sicilian lunch, four Etna wines including a sparkling, and gardens for the children afterwards. $73, rated 4.9 / 5 from 84 reviews, and the most family-friendly wine experience on this site. Our breakdown →
Near the Duomo, Tenute dei Ciclopi’s tasting room pours four Etna DOC wines, a Bianco, a Rosato and two vintages of Rosso, with a Sicilian board in 90 minutes for $46, rated 5.0 / 5 from 22 reviews. The volcanic wine tasting in Piazza Scammacca does four glasses with matched food in the city’s metropolitan market for $58.
What Catania cannot give you
The Etna Nord estates. Most Catania tours that promise “wineries” mean one stop for lunch, and the classic north-slope cellar day, an hour at Gambino or one of its neighbours at 900 metres, is a Taormina product. If you have a car, the cellar-door tastings are reachable from Catania in about an hour and cost a fraction of a tour. For the full picture of the mountain, see all Etna wine tours, then check availability for your dates.

What Catania Wine Tour Guests Say
"This was one of the best tours we have all ever been on. We had 5 adults and 2 kids (5&7) and it was great for everyone. Our Guide was amazing. The Alcantara was incredible. Lunch at the winery was very good. Etna (and the caves) as always, was so cool Highly recommend!"

"The support, the experience, and the tour guide made the experience unique for the family. Those who love nature will enjoy this tour."
"The tour was perfect from start to finish! The hike to Mount Etna was super easy, lunch was delicious, and Alcantara is spectacular. I had never seen such incredible landscapes as on this tour! I would like to highlight the kindness of the guide, Matteo. In addition to being able to explain everything related to the volcano and the history of Catania, he treated everyone very kindly, especially me, as I had problems with my cell phone at the end of the tour and he went out of his way to help me. I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone, just as I already have!"
"Fabulous service from Mattel he went above and beyond all day. His knowledge and expertise was a delight to listen to and above all he was genuinely caring to all of us in the group. Our group were lovely social and like minded people. The day was a pleasure. Thank you for such a fabulous experience. Michelle R"
"we absolutely loved this trip, you get to do so much and our guide, Francesco was so knowledgeable about everything and his English was perfect! we loved hiking Etna, the lunch and wine were delicious and filling and it was also a highlight getting to see the Alcantara gorge in the same day (and worth it in August to cool down). we got picked up and dropped off at our hotel and the transport was lovely and air-conditioned. would highly recommend this trip!"
"It was perfect!!! Great live guide. Beautiful scenery, a great lunch, and great value for the money!!!!"

"We were picked up by Andrea in a small van. The location was easy to find, very close to where we were staying. Andrea was a great guide. He knew so much about the geology of the area. MT. Etna was actively erupting, which was pretty amazing to me. Andrea was very easy to understand and interesting along the hike. The hike is not too difficult, although it was extremely hot while we were in Sicily. Bring water and if you don't have good treads on your athletic shoes, take the boots that they offer. We stopped at the lunch place before the hike to use the bathroom and get the boots. The path has some steep parts and you will be glad to have the traction, especially on the way down. The views are spectacular! lunch at the Emilio Sciacca winery was very good and the other family we were with was very pleasant. It isn't one of those big wineries where there are busloads of people. Bring water shoes for Alcantara, it is very rocky."

Etna Wine Tours from Catania — Questions Before You Book
Drive times, what a Catania departure actually includes, and where to taste if you do not want to leave the city.
Close. Rifugio Sapienza, the road-head on the south side at about 1,900 metres, is roughly 35 km from the city centre and about an hour's drive up through Nicolosi. That is why Catania tours can afford a full crater walk and a lava cave before lunch. The north-slope wine villages are further, around 90 minutes, which is why most Catania tours stop at one winery for lunch rather than touring the Etna Nord estates.
For a full day, the Mount Etna, wine and Alcantara tour with lunch: $110, eight hours, a crater walk to 2,000 metres, a lava cave, a winery lunch with wine and the Alcantara Gorges, rated 4.9 / 5 from 531 reviews. For an evening, the Mount Etna sunset tour with wine tasting at $87 is rated 5.0 / 5 from 201 reviews. For wine without the drive, the urban winery lunch inside Catania at $73 is rated 4.9 / 5 from 84 reviews.
Most full-day volcano tours from Catania stop at one winery, where lunch is served with Etna wines. That is a genuine estate visit, but it is one course of a volcano day, not a cellar tour. If wine is the priority, book the urban winery lunch in Catania, a tasting room in the city centre, or a cellar-door tasting you drive to. For multi-estate cellar days, the Taormina departures have more choice.
On most full-day tours, yes, from your accommodation or a nearby point in the city. Check the inclusions on the two sunset tours: one collects in the city centre and Trecastagni, the other meets at Piazza Stesicoro and lists hotel pick-up as excluded. The urban winery lunch is a short ride from the centre and offers a shuttle at extra cost from April to October.
Yes. The Etna jeep tour with lava, wine and a Sicilian brunch lists the Catania cruise harbour as a departure point, and several full-day tours collect near the port on request. Tell the operator your ship's docking and all-aboard times when you book, and choose a tour that returns with a margin. Most Catania volcano days run about eight hours.
Closed shoes and a layer. At 1,900 to 2,000 metres it is markedly cooler than the coast even in August, and the wind on the crater rims is real. The full-day tours lend boots, jackets and walking sticks free if you ask when booking, and swap to snowshoes in winter. Sunset tours supply a windproof jacket but ask for closed shoes. Bring water for the walk; the wine comes later.
The volcano days usually accept accompanied children and lend equipment, though caves and crater walks are not for pushchairs. The sunset tour excludes under-6s. The most family-friendly wine option from Catania is the urban winery lunch, which welcomes families and has a sandbox, trampoline and treasure-hunt map for the children. The city-centre tasting room offers children a free non-alcoholic version.
Yes. Winter is when the crater walks become snowshoe walks, with equipment supplied. The upper mountain closes in bad weather and tours are rerouted rather than refunded, so a winter booking means being flexible about the route. The urban wineries and tasting rooms are unaffected. See the best time for wine tasting in Sicily for month-by-month notes.
From $46 for a 90-minute Etna DOC tasting near the Duomo, $73 for the urban winery lunch, $84 to $87 for a sunset tour with a glass at altitude, $110 to $137 for a full volcano day with a winery lunch, and $121 for the half-day crater-and-wine tour. The price difference between the volcano days is mostly group size and whether the gorge is included. Full breakdown in Sicily wine tour prices.
Every tour compared here can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before departure for a full refund, and confirmation is instant. The sunset tours need a minimum of two participants, so solo travellers should contact the operator before booking. Check availability for your dates.
