Mount Etna Winery Tour and Premium Tasting at Gambino

The fullest cellar-door tasting on the mountain: a welcome white, a sommelier-led walk above the barrels, then five glasses of current vintages with a hot course and a cannolo, 900 metres up on Etna Nord. Rated 4.8 / 5 from 124 reviews.

Highlights

  • Sommelier-guided tour of the Gambino winery on a walkway above the barrel hall
  • Welcome glass of white, then five current-vintage Etna wines
  • Food that runs from cheeses and cold cuts to a hot course and a mignon cannolo
  • Terrace at about 900 metres on Etna's north-eastern slope with views to the coast
  • No transfer in the price: you pay for the estate, not the minibus

What's Included

  • Guided tour of the winery
  • Welcome glass of white wine
  • Five glasses of current-vintage wines
  • Hard-boiled egg, Gambino extra-virgin olive oil and preserves in oil
  • Sicilian cheeses and cold cuts

  • Mignon Sicilian cannolo with ricotta

How a Cellar-Door Tasting Works

You get yourself there; the estate does the rest. Four things to know.

  1. Book a time, not just a date

Estate tastings are scheduled, not drop-in. Most listings ask you to state a start time when booking and confirm it afterwards. Turning up at a cellar door on spec rarely works on Etna.

  2. Drive up, and allow for the altitude

The north-slope estates around Linguaglossa sit at about 900 metres; Linguaglossa is roughly 23 km from Taormina and around an hour from Catania. The last kilometres are narrow and steep. Bring a layer, even in August.

  3. Welcome glass, cellar walk, then the flight

Almost every estate hands you a white on arrival, walks you past the tanks and barrels, then sits you down. Four or five glasses follow, white to red, each with food. The premium tastings add a hot course.

  4. Buy at the cellar, and choose a driver

Bottles at the estate cost well under restaurant prices and guests mention this more than anything. Someone has to drive down a mountain road afterwards; if nobody wants that job, book a tour with pick-up instead.

Cellar Door

Choosing an Etna Wine Tasting

What a direct estate booking costs, what it pours, and when a tour with a driver is the better deal.

A cellar-door tasting is the purest form of an Etna wine tour and the cheapest. You book a time at the estate, drive up, and for $44 to $73 a sommelier walks you through the winery and pours four or five Etna DOC wines with food. A tour that does the same thing with a minibus costs roughly a third more from Taormina, and you are paying for the transfer, not the wine. The trade is simple: money against the need for a sober driver.

The north-slope estates at Linguaglossa

Gambino Vini, 900 metres up on Etna Nord above Linguaglossa, is the estate that appears most in guest reviews of the Taormina tours, and it sells two direct tastings. The wine tasting experience at Etna Nord is the standard version: a welcome white, a walk over the barrel hall and 11 metres down to the cellar, then four glasses with cheese, egg, preserves and the estate’s oil, $49, rated 4.9 / 5 from 55 reviews. The Mount Etna winery tour and premium tasting is our featured pick on this page: the same walk, then five glasses of current vintages with cold cuts, a seasonal soup, grilled sausage with potatoes and a cannolo. $71, about two hours, 4.8 / 5 from 124 reviews, and the only cellar-door tasting on the mountain that is genuinely a meal. Both need a start time stated at booking and are wine-free for under-18s. Our breakdown →

The cheaper and the smaller

The site’s cheapest Etna tasting is at a family winery on the east side, near Sant’Alfio. The wine tasting on Mount Etna at Favazza pours four glasses with a food pairing that changes daily with the garden, for $44, rated 4.8 / 5 from 29 reviews. On the south side, the Etna wine tasting at Ragalna does four wines with Sicilian food for $75, and the Sicilian Soul palmento tasting outside Catania pours three wines with salumi, cheeses and pane cunzato inside a 19th-century stone press house for $57, rated 5.0 / 5 from 11 reviews. Small review counts on these are a throughput signal, not a quality one: a family estate that runs one tasting a day accrues reviews slowly.

Tasting rooms without the mountain

If nobody wants to drive, Etna’s wines have come down to the city. Tenute dei Ciclopi, steps from Catania’s Duomo, is the only Etna estate with a tasting room in the centre: four DOC wines, a Bianco, a Rosato and two vintages of Rosso, with a Sicilian board, 90 minutes, $46, rated 5.0 / 5 from 22 reviews. The volcanic wine tasting in Piazza Scammacca pairs four glasses with dishes from the market’s chefs for $58, rated 4.4 / 5 from 131 reviews. Neither is a winery visit, but both are a sound first lesson in what Etna tastes like, at a walkable address. The Catania departures page has the rest.

When the tour is the better deal

Two cases. If you are three or four and nobody drives, the half-day guided tasting from Taormina at $67 buys the same north-slope estate visit plus the transfer, and it is the most-reviewed Etna wine tour there is. And if you want more than one estate in a day, driving between cellars at 900 metres after two flights is not a plan; the two-winery days from Taormina and the private three-winery tour exist for exactly that. Salvatore United States

"This was the best wine/food experience we have ever had. The location was stunning, the wine and food amazing. A welcome glass outside followed by 5 wines seated indoors, each paired with hot and cold food, including a desert. We were absolutely stuffed. Our server Sofia was lovely and explained everything about the wine and food. We liked a couple of the wines so much we took some away with us. They ship to the UK free of charge over a certain amount, we shall certainly be ordering."
