For the estate tastings, yes, or a taxi: the cellars sit at around 900 metres on the north slope and transport is not included. The exceptions are the Catania tasting rooms, which are walkable from the centre. If nobody in your party is happy to drive down a mountain road after five glasses, book a tour with pick-up instead; the half-day tasting from Taormina costs $67 and does the driving.

Rarely. Estate tastings on Etna are scheduled: you book a date, most listings ask you to state a preferred start time, and the winery confirms it. The Gambino tastings, for example, say the booking needs confirmation. Book at least a day or two ahead, and earlier in September and October, when harvest visits fill the slots.

Etna DOC in the usual order: an Etna Bianco built on Carricante first, sometimes a sparkling, then a rosato, then one or two Etna Rosso vintages from Nerello Mascalese. Four glasses is standard, five on the premium tastings. Expect the red to pour pale for its structure; that is the grape, not a fault. A welcome glass of white on arrival is common and usually not counted in the four.

About 90 minutes to two hours at the estate: a welcome glass, a guided walk through the winery, then the seated tasting. The city tasting rooms run about 90 minutes. Allow another hour each way for the drive from the coast to the north-slope estates, and do not schedule a second tasting the same afternoon unless someone else is driving.

Generally yes, accompanied by a parent, and they are not served wine. Gambino sells a youth ticket for a no-wine version of the tasting, and the Catania tasting room near the Duomo offers children a free non-alcoholic experience. It is cheaper and more focused, not better. A direct tasting gives you the same cellar walk and flight for a third less than a tour, and the money goes on wine rather than a minibus. A tour adds the transfer, a guide narrating the drive up through the lava villages, and often a second estate or a full lunch. If you have a car and a designated driver, book direct. If not, or if you want two estates, book the tour.
